Metals and steel

Quantity surveying and claims support for steelworks, metal processing plants and facility upgrades.

Commercial challenges and how we approach them

Metal processing construction can include heavy equipment foundations, industrial structures, service systems and material-handling installations. An upgrade may replace one production area while retaining the surrounding plant. Equipment loads and layouts affect several construction packages and need to be reflected in their agreed scope.

Modernisation within a furnace or mill shutdown

The Challenge

Discovering extra work once a furnace or mill is shut down leaves little room to defer the decision. Additional repairs and measures to recover the programme can quickly become mixed together.

Our approach

We establish the priced shutdown scope and readiness commitments. Discovered work and recovery measures are valued separately, with records linking additional resources to the actual cause and instruction.

Heavy equipment and precision foundations

The Challenge

Mill stands, cranes and process equipment can require specific foundation geometry, alignment and embedded items. Late vendor revisions may affect substantial concrete and steelwork already placed.

Our approach

We reconcile the vendor's geometry and loads with the civil order and the survey evidence. Where information changes after concrete or steelwork has been placed, the valuation identifies the actual alteration and any reusable work. It also distinguishes a revised requirement from a foundation that failed to meet the original alignment tolerance.

Cooling, extraction and power connections

The Challenge

A new production line may depend on major cooling-water, extraction and electrical works outside the main equipment order. Missing interfaces can defer start-up and create competing claims between suppliers.

Our approach

We identify who provides each cooling, extraction and power connection, and assess any additional work or attendance against that agreed boundary.

Refractory work and staged heat-up

The Challenge

Refractory work is not complete as soon as the material is installed. Preparation, drying and staged heat-up can govern when the furnace returns to use.

Our approach

We establish the specialist sequence included in the price and assess changes against the repair findings and actual attendance. Extra repairs, repeated work and waiting for operating conditions are kept separate.

Production trials and performance milestones

The Challenge

Acceptance may depend on specified output, product tolerances and trial conditions. A line that is installed may still need integrated controls and suitable feed before those tests can be completed.

Our approach

We compare the required output and tolerance tests with the actual feed, controls and operating conditions recorded by the production team. That helps distinguish additional trials from an unmet original obligation and gives a basis for reviewing performance-related deductions.
