Commercial challenges and how we approach them

Coastal construction may include sea walls, revetments, access structures and associated earthworks. The scope and quantities need to be understood alongside the planned working areas, access periods and temporary arrangements. Survey information and material placement records help establish what has been delivered and what has changed.

Tidal working time and storm exposure

The Challenge

A tidal window can close before the planned work is complete. That can leave temporary protection in place and require another attendance even when the permanent quantity is unchanged.

Our approach

We compare the priced tide and weather assumptions with daily conditions, progress and instructions. The assessment needs to establish whether the extra cost arose from an ordinary working restriction, an instructed sequence change or another cause. This is more useful than treating every weather-affected shift as recoverable standby.

Rock grading, supply and placement quantities

The Challenge

Armourstone is specified by properties and grading, not simply total tonnage. Supply changes, rejected material or revised profiles can affect transport, handling and the quantity needed to complete the defence.

Our approach

We reconcile accepted rock grades and the surveyed profile with the payment rules. Delivered tonnage alone does not establish the quantity of payable permanent work.

Beach levels changing between surveys

The Challenge

The beach can move between the baseline and acceptance surveys. Without agreed dates and measurement rules, original recharge, erosion and additional replenishment can become mixed in one disputed quantity.

Our approach

We help establish the survey dates, measurement basis and acceptance stages. Survey evidence and instructions are reconciled so original work, natural movement and any required additional replenishment remain distinct.

Seasonal restrictions and public access

The Challenge

Ecological periods, tourism and beach access can constrain deliveries and construction methods. A revised start or access arrangement may change haulage, temporary routes and mobilisation plans.

Our approach

We check the actual seasonal and access restrictions used for tendering. If a revised start changes the delivery method, we assess the resulting routes, attendance or remobilisation using the instructions and resource records. A general seasonal uplift would not explain those costs.
