Hydrogen and carbon capture

Quantity surveying and claims support for hydrogen and carbon capture construction projects.

Commercial challenges and how we approach them

Hydrogen and carbon capture developments combine specialist process plant with foundations, buildings, utilities, pipework and connections. They may form a new facility or be added to an operating site. Each construction package needs a clear interface with the equipment supplier and wider transport or storage infrastructure.

Process design developing after early commitments

The Challenge

Hydrogen and carbon-capture projects can procure major equipment while process details are still developing. Revised vendor data can change foundations, pipe racks, utilities and the balance-of-plant scope.

Our approach

We identify what was actually fixed when each order was placed and which aspects were expressly provisional. Later vendor information is then assessed against that commitment. This matters where one party regards a larger foundation or revised utility demand as ordinary design development and another treats it as additional scope. The change account must explain the original assumption, the instruction and the construction consequences.

Electrolysers and their supporting utilities

The Challenge

An electrolyser needs its supporting power, water, cooling and compression systems. Buying the equipment does not necessarily buy those connections.

Our approach

We reconcile the equipment order with the utility and construction packages, including who installs, connects and attends the tests.

Capture equipment connected to an operating plant

The Challenge

Carbon-capture retrofits may require flue-gas connections, steam or other utilities and work within a live facility. A revised shutdown window can change temporary works, labour arrangements and the installation sequence.

Our approach

We record the live-plant tie-in arrangements used for pricing. If the shutdown moves, instructions and resource records help assess changed shifts, temporary works and repeat attendance without charging again for restrictions already included.

Safety-study changes to the construction scope

The Challenge

A safety-review decision can reach beyond the item being reviewed. Changes to separation, ventilation or detection may also alter pipe racks, buildings, cable routes and work already ordered. The technical decision and its construction cost need to be tracked together.

Our approach

We cost the requirements issued by the responsible technical team across all affected packages. Change records explain the original provision, the instructed revision and the associated omissions or rework.

Readiness across production, transport and storage

The Challenge

A production or capture facility can be ready before downstream transport, storage or offtake infrastructure. That mismatch can affect integrated testing, retained specialists and acceptance milestones.

Our approach

We check the contractual dependency before assessing standby or retesting. A ready production facility does not, by itself, establish who pays when transport or storage infrastructure is unavailable.
