Commercial challenges and how we approach them

Network construction can extend through several work areas, combining excavation, supports, installation, access and reinstatement. Quantities and working conditions may differ from one route section to the next. The commercial account needs to identify the scope and progress of each section while keeping shared mobilisation and temporary arrangements visible. This includes substations, transformers and connection works as well as the routes between them, with equipment supply distinguished from installation.

Cable routes and crossing quantities

The Challenge

A metre of cable route through open ground is not the same construction task as a deep road crossing. Uniform rates can hide those differences.

Our approach

We split the measured account into identifiable route sections and check what each rate includes. A revised crossing may affect excavation, support, joint bays and reinstatement as well as cable length. Survey information and the instruction should explain that wider change, with original allowances credited where they no longer apply.

Outage windows and energisation dates

The Challenge

Substation connections and live-network interfaces depend on approved outages. A cancelled or shortened window can leave jointing teams and test equipment idle or require a later mobilisation.

Our approach

We establish who had to be ready for the outage and compare the planned window with the actual access. Jointing-team records and equipment bookings help identify the real standby or return costs; they also help challenge costs that would have been incurred anyway.

Long-lead transformers and switchgear

The Challenge

The civils may be complete while the transformer is still in manufacture. Late equipment or revised cable-entry details can then change the installation sequence and the next payable milestone.

Our approach

We compare supply milestones and technical-information dates with the construction packages. Changes are traced across the affected work, distinguishing storage and resequencing from costs already included in the installation price.

Land access and reinstatement commitments

The Challenge

Wayleave conditions and landowner agreements can affect temporary access, working widths, crop protection and final reinstatement. A route that is technically approved may still not be available on the assumed terms.

Our approach

We make the landowner's access and reinstatement commitments visible in the package scope, then value authorised changes by location.
