What it means in practice

Read this alongside the NEC Dictionary of Terms.

An activity schedule connects the price to identifiable parts of the work. It is not the same as the programme, which explains sequencing and timing. NEC Option A and Option C use the schedule differently, so do not assume the same payment assessment applies to both.

Check how activities are described and when they qualify for payment. A pre-signing contract review can examine whether the proposed payment structure matches your package.

Worked example

The facts

An electrical subcontractor prices first fix at £8,000 and testing at £2,000 under an assumed unamended Option A arrangement.

What happens

  1. It checks the contractual completion requirements for each activity.

  2. First fix is complete at assessment, but testing has not started.

What this shows

The £8,000 completed activity is considered under the payment rules; the whole £10,000 is not automatically payable.
