# Bridges and structures

Quantity surveying and claims support for bridge construction, replacement, repair and associated structures.

## Commercial challenges and how we approach them

Bridge projects bring substructures, decks and approaches together with temporary access and interfaces to the surrounding route. Repair and replacement can add retained structures and staged working. The package needs a clear measurement basis for permanent and temporary works.

### Temporary support and the construction sequence

#### The Challenge

Bridge erection, bearing replacement and structural alterations can depend on jacking, propping or staged loading. A revised sequence may change substantial temporary works without changing the finished structure.

#### Our approach

We identify the temporary support and sequence included at tender, then check the engineer's revised requirements. The price may involve more than extra steel: redesign, specialist jacking, hire duration and removal can all change. We assess those elements together and reconcile any temporary-work allowance already included in the permanent rates.

### Hidden condition beneath decks and bearings

#### The Challenge

The true repair extent may only become visible when joints, surfacing or bearings are removed.

#### Our approach

We record the exposed condition and the instructed repair by location. Measured areas, depths and replacement details provide a firmer basis for valuation than a general allowance for additional deterioration.

### Lifts and closures that must coincide

#### The Challenge

A bridge lift can depend on a crane, abnormal-load delivery and a road or rail closure arriving together. If the closure moves, cancellation charges and remobilisation may arise under several different orders. Those charges need to be checked against the actual bookings and the responsibility for readiness.

#### Our approach

We reconcile readiness responsibilities and booked resources before commitment. Actual closure and plant records support a cause-based assessment of additional costs and available mitigation.

### Fabricated components and site geometry

#### The Challenge

Steelwork, precast units, bearings and joints need to match surveyed positions and tolerances. Revised geometry or late information can affect fabrication and require site alterations.

#### Our approach

We compare the fabrication information with the surveys and authorised revisions, distinguishing changed geometry from components that do not meet the original tolerances.
