# Back-to-back: definition and example

A subcontract whose terms mirror the main contract, passing its obligations down to you.

Guidance for England and Wales. Check the contract, amendments and facts that apply to your job.

## What it means in practice

The expression describes an intended relationship between main-contract and subcontract obligations. It does not identify which terms have actually been incorporated or whether the two documents conflict. Deadlines, design duties and exclusions need to be read against the subcontract's own wording.

Obtain every incorporated document before agreeing terms. A [pre-signing contract review](<https://www.quantsurv.com/contract-review/services/pre-signing-contract-review>) can identify obligations that are unclear or difficult to perform.

## Worked example

### The facts

A ductwork subcontract says the specialist must comply with relevant main-contract obligations.

### What happens

1. The specialist requests the referenced documents and the order-of-precedence clause.

2. It checks whether a main-contract notice deadline leaves enough time for a subcontract notice.

### What this shows

A general label is replaced by a specific list of obligations, deadlines and points needing clarification.
