Guidance for England and Wales. Check the contract, amendments and facts that apply to your job.

## What it means in practice

Read this alongside [the NEC Dictionary of Terms](<https://www.neccontract.com/resources/dictionary>) and [section 110 of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/53/section/110>).

An assessment date fixes the point at which the amount due is evaluated under the relevant NEC payment mechanism. It is distinct from the due date and final date for payment. The subcontract form, Contract Data and amendments determine the actual sequence.

Keep application and assessment dates in the same register without treating them as interchangeable. [Underpayment prevention](<https://www.quantsurv.com/underpaid/services/underpayment-prevention>) helps establish a consistent application and evidence routine.

## Worked example

### The facts

A subcontractor has a monthly assessment date but submits its application several days earlier.

### What happens

1. It identifies the work and records relevant to the assessment.

2. It separately checks when the assessed payment falls due and must be paid.

### What this shows

The assessment tells the parties what is being valued; the payment provisions determine when the money should arrive.
