# Payment dates calculator

Work out the deadlines in one payment cycle, from the due date to the final date for payment, with the working shown.

## How to use it

Enter one interim payment cycle to see its deadlines. The default periods follow the relevant provisions of the [Scheme for Construction Contracts (England and Wales) Regulations 1998](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/649/schedule/part/II>), where those provisions apply. Identify any agreed terms before choosing the defaults.

If you are not paid, you may be able to suspend work, which means stopping until you are paid. The earliest date follows [section 112 of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/53/section/112>).

This models one interim payment cycle. It does not calculate a final-account payment or a postponement following a default payment notice. Check any change to the timetable before relying on the results.

Part of the UK

Where the job is. It sets which bank holidays are left out.

Who sets the payment dates

Use the Scheme periods only where the relevant fallback provisions apply. An unsigned or oral agreement can still contain payment terms.

Last day of the payment period

The end of the period your claim covers. If your contract sets none, the Scheme uses periods of 28 days.

Date you gave your claim

The day the payer received your written application, with the sum and how you worked it out.

### The dates

Enter the dates above. The deadlines and their working appear here.

Under the Act and the Scheme, a period starts the day after its date and leaves out Christmas Day, Good Friday and bank holidays. Weekends still count.

Periods your contract sets are counted the way you choose above. The notice to suspend work always follows the Act’s rule.

These dates are for guidance only. They do not say whether a notice was valid or arrived in time. Check them against your own contract.

## Understanding your results

Use the dates as a draft payment calendar. Check the selected mechanism, trigger date, service requirements and amendments against your actual agreement. A correct date calculation does not establish that a notice was validly served or that an amount is due.

## How it works

Where your contract is silent, the Scheme sets the payment dates.

The **due date** is 7 days after the payment period ends, or the day you make your claim if later ([paragraph 4](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/649/schedule/part/II/paragraph/4>)). Your claim is your written application, stating the sum and how you worked it out ([paragraph 12](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/649/schedule/part/II/paragraph/12>)). Where the contract sets no payment period, the Scheme uses 28 days.

The other party sends its **payment notice** within 5 days after the due date, stating the sum it thinks is due ([paragraph 9](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/649/schedule/part/II/paragraph/9>)).

The **final date for payment** is 17 days after the due date ([paragraph 8](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/649/schedule/part/II/paragraph/8>)). It is the last day the other party can pay without being late.

A **pay less notice** must arrive no later than 7 days before the final date for payment ([paragraph 10](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/649/schedule/part/II/paragraph/10>)). It tells you that the other party intends to pay less than the sum due.

[Section 116](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/53/section/116>) of the Act sets how days are counted. A period starts the day after its date, and leaves out Christmas Day, Good Friday and bank holidays. Weekends still count. We apply it to the Scheme's periods, because the Scheme applies through the Act ([section 114](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/53/section/114>)), and to your notice to suspend work. We count the periods your contract sets the way your contract says.

If the sum due is not paid by the final date, section 112 lets you suspend work. First you must give at least 7 days' written notice of your intention, stating your grounds. The earliest date shown assumes you give that notice the day after the final date.

Bank holidays come from the Government's list of [UK bank holidays](<https://www.gov.uk/bank-holidays>) for 2025 to 2028, checked on 26 September 2026. Pick the part of the UK the job is in.

Scotland has its own [Scheme for Construction Contracts (Scotland) Regulations 1998](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/687/made/data.html>), with [2011 amendments](<https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ssi/2011/371/made/data.html>). Its corresponding interim-payment provisions use the same 7, 5, 17 and 7-day periods modelled here, with Scottish bank holidays. Northern Ireland has separate law: only user-entered contractual periods are calculated for it, with no statutory suspension date.

The dates are guidance only. They do not say whether a notice was valid or arrived in time. That depends on your contract and how the notice was sent. If you are unsure which rules apply to you, ask your solicitor.

Our [Main-contract and subcontract administration support](<https://www.quantsurv.com/quantity-surveying?service=%2Fquantity-surveying%2Fcontract-management#client-types>) service turns the agreed payment mechanism into a working calendar, with responsibility for each date recorded.
